Bosnia and Herzegovina (9).

Bosnia and Herzegovina, text by Alojz Benac and Ivan Lovenovic. Hardcover book published by Sour “Svjetlost” Jugoslovenska Revija 1986.

Banja Luka is a town which after the Liberation, developed rapidly as an industrial centre, with a university and many other educational institutions. Lying on the river Vrbas, Banja Luka is mentioned in historical documents as far bck as the XV century, and the first settlements in this region date from the Roman period. In 1969 Banja Luka and a wide area surrounding it were struck by a catastrophic earthquake which caused great suffering and loss among the population and enormous damage to the economy and to all other fields of activity. More than 80% of the town's buildings were destroyed, but in a powerful demonstration of solidarity on the part of the peoples and nationalities of Yugoslavia it was completely rebuilt.

Banja Luka is a town of tree lined avenues and many cultural monuments, among which are the old Kastel fortress, the theatre and numerous other cultural institutions.
