This is a typical sight along the roads of Tiumen, which has been experiencing an “oil boon” since the early 1960’s.  It was only recently that school-texts taught us that the resources of Siberia include “everything except oil”.

Visitors from abroad often remark that “all of Siberia has the appearance of a single vast construction site”.  And indeed high-voltage electric lines have become one of its most typical sights.

Any major construction site in Central Asia, whether it is a new hydraulic station, a large industrial enterprise, or a canal stretching over a hundred kilometers through the desert, attracts a large number of young workers, for they provide excellent possibilities for expressing their talents and professional skills.
