Banja
Luka is a town which after the Liberation, developed rapidly as an
industrial centre, with a university and many other educational
institutions. Lying on the river Vrbas, Banja Luka is mentioned in
historical documents as far bck as the XV century, and the first
settlements in this region date from the Roman period. In 1969 Banja
Luka and a wide area surrounding it were struck by a catastrophic
earthquake which caused great suffering and loss among the population
and enormous damage to the economy and to all other fields of
activity. More than 80% of the town's buildings were destroyed, but
in a powerful demonstration of solidarity on the part of the peoples
and nationalities of Yugoslavia it was completely rebuilt.
Banja
Luka is a town of tree lined avenues and many cultural monuments,
among which are the old Kastel fortress, the theatre and numerous
other cultural institutions.
